The route
The Cammino Regina Camilla (CRC) includes a circular route of about 175 kilometers which starts and ends at the Priverno-Fossanova railway station and goes through all the villages of the Amaseno Valley: Fossanova, Priverno, Roccagorga, Maenza, Prossedi, Giuliano di Roma, Villa Santo Stefano, Castro dei Volsci, Vallecorsa, Amaseno, Pisterzo, Roccasecca dei Volsci, Sonnino.
An extraordinary territory from a cultural and naturalistic point of view, located in southern Lazio between the provinces of Latina and Frosinone.
The Way takes its name from the Queen of the Volsci population, Camilla, protagonist of the legend narrated by Virgil in the Aeneid, a legend that unites all the villages of the Valley. The Way follows ancient transhumance routes, mule tracks, historical itineraries and pilgrimage routes and it crosses already existing paths in this same area, such as Via Francigena in the South with the goal to give value to the already existing heritage in the Valley. It can be crossed on foot, by bike or on horseback.
Queen Camilla
The legend tells that Camilla, when she was still a little child, was thrown in the Amaseno river, enveloped by a tree bark and tied to a lance, by her father Metabo, the King of Volsci population, while he was running away from the city of Privernum.
Diane, goddess of hunting, whom the little Camilla was consecrated to, ensured that Camilla safely survived. The young Camilla grew up in the lush woods of the Valley. Metabo grew her daughter as a proud and corageous warrior, fed on horse milk, dressed with wild animal fur, and trained in the archery practice. Camilla’s popularity grew so much that the inhabitants of the Valley wanted her to be their Queen. Camilla lived with courage and pride, defending her land and people at the cost of her life.
